Spring Cleaning Tips for Lazy Homemakers

Friday, March 23, 2018

It's not that we're lazy. It's just that we find it incredibly boring.  I notice a pattern. When I know that I have to clean I walk outside and start pulling weeds, browse the web, start writing a blog post, take a shower, stare out of the window mindlessly, start painting with my kids....anything but cleaning. I do like to organize, paint, decorate etc. but the process of doing routine things daily is mind numbing. Here are some tips on how I trick my brain into cleaning.

1. CLEAN FOR THE TOMORROW YOU - The today me does not want to clean however the tomorrow me would be so grateful! When I clean now I ask myself "What would the tomorrow me like?" I then begin cleaning as a gift to the future me.

2. LISTEN TO SOMETHING - My mother is the cleanest most organized person I've ever met! Thinking back on my childhood she would always have the radio tuned to a talk show while she cleaned. Any Trinidadians remember Tony and Dale in the morning? I think that that's where I got my love for talk radio from! Now while I clean I put on a podcast or an online talkshow in the background. It tricks my brain into thinking that what I'm doing is actually enjoyable. Try not to put on anything that requires watching a screen because that would defeat the purpose. Trust me, I've tried! lol

3. HAVE LESS - Having a closet 1/4 full with pieces that you love is much better than a jam packed closet with items that are just ok to you. I apply this same principle to each of our living spaces. I don't have a lot of decor but what we have we love. I loved reading "The life Changing Art Of Tidying Up" by Marie Kondo! It's a must read and if you're a busy momma like me I'd recommend getting the audio book so that you can listen while you're on the go.

In the book she talks about how to effectively declutter and I've found cleaning to be way more efficient since I've applied some of her principles.

4. SET A TIMER - Have you ever had someone call you and say that they'd be by in 45 minutes and you manage to clean more in those 45 minutes than you would all day? Lol! I write a list and set the timer for 1 hr and I get a lot more done! That way I have the rest of the day for the things that I enjoy more; like adventuring with the kids, cooking and gardening.

5. DON'T FOLD CLOTHES - Father Lord! I know! I cringed too while typing it! But listen, sometimes something has to give! So, I have a no fold system with my kids clothes. Shirts, pants and pajamas have their own drawers for each child and I simply put the items in the respective drawers. During the week I go through and fold the items if I get a chance but let me tell you...with 4 boys the no fold system is better than them picking from a laundry pile on the couch all week. At least it's clean and in the drawers!

6. TEAM EFFORT - In our home everyone pitches in! I try for the most part to tell the boys that school is their main job for right now but when I see that they don't have a heavy workload they help me unpack the dishwasher, load the dryer, clean mirrors, appliance surfaces etc. They also have to clean up their toys and put them into their respective bins.

My husband helps to wash dishes sometimes and also helps with laundry.

7. DAILY CLEANING RITUALS - We each must create the ideal cleaning schedule that works for our family. My morning routine for cleaning includes, making the beds, wiping down bathroom counters, unloading the dishwasher and putting in a load of laundry. This takes about 20 - 30 minutes. At night I load the dishwasher, put away clothes, wipe down kitchen counters and sweep kitchen and dining room areas.

I have a list of 5 chores that I need to accomplish during week. They are; mopping, scrubbing tubs and toilet, cleaning appliances, cleaning mirrors and vacuuming. I try not to designate a particular day to do each. I just choose one according to how I feel that day. Sometimes if I'm extra motivated I'll do all of them in one day to free up my time for the other days!

9. HIRE HELP - If you can I'd totally recommend hiring help for cleaning! Having someone come 1 - 2 times per month to clean your home is totally worth it! Think about it momma. You are a nurse, teacher, cook, maid, driver, counselor, interior designer, wife...not to mention if you work or attend school. It's a lot! If cleaning isn't your gift outsource it to focus on what your actual gift is!

I hope that these cleaning tips motivate you to do some spring cleaning! Remember, tidying is a skill and the more you practice it the better you'll become!
